There isn’t a “right” way to enjoy Nolin Lake.

Some guests never stop moving.

Others find one quiet cove and stay there all afternoon.

Find a Quiet Cove

One of the best parts about Nolin Lake is simply anchoring somewhere peaceful.

Float. Swim. Listen to music. Eat lunch. Forget what time it is. Sometimes that’s the perfect day.

Go Tubing

If you have kids—or adults who still act like kids—bring a tube.

Few things create more laughter than a full afternoon of taking turns behind the boat.

Cruise the Shoreline

The shoreline changes around every bend. Towering trees. Rock bluffs. Hidden coves. It’s worth slowing down and exploring.

Watch Sunset from the Water

This is something everyone should do at least once. As the lake gets quiet and the sun drops behind the trees, the entire atmosphere changes. It’s easily one of our favorite moments on Nolin Lake.

Paddle the Quiet Water

Not every adventure needs a motor. Kayaks and paddle boards let you explore parts of the shoreline most boats never reach. Early mornings are especially peaceful. You’ll often have the water almost entirely to yourself.

While there are designated public swimming beaches, many locals prefer anchoring in one of the lake’s countless quiet coves.

These calmer areas usually have less boat traffic, clearer water, and plenty of space to float and relax.

Our Tip: All of these beaches are only open seasonally and are dependent on water levels. We reccomend calling or checking the marina/park/campground website roughly 1 week prior to your stay for the most accurate information.

Dog Creek (Boat or Shore)

Dog Creek is one of Nolin Lake’s most popular fishing areas, with plenty of coves, creek channels, and underwater structure to explore by boat. If you’d rather stay on land, there’s also a fishing dock next to the boat ramp that’s perfect for casting from shore.

Wax Area (Best by Boat)

The Wax area is a favorite during the spring and early summer, especially for bass fishing. Its mix of shallow water, points, and submerged cover makes it a productive area to explore by boat.

Tailwaters (Best from Shore)

Located below the dam, the Tailwaters are one of the best places for shore fishing in the area. It’s an especially great option for families, thanks to the nearby playground where kids can take a break between casts.

The Dam (Best by Boat)

The deep water near the dam attracts a variety of species throughout the year, making it a favorite for anglers fishing from a boat. The changing depths and underwater structure offer opportunities in every season.

Our Tip: Early morning and the hour before sunset are typically the most productive times to fish during the summer. If you have flexibility, plan your fishing trip on a weekday. Holiday weekends bring heavy boat traffic, which can make fishing more challenging and take away from the peaceful experience Nolin Lake is known for.
